Description
The Muluk community coral reef fishery is located on the eastern side of Karkar Island off the northern shores of the Madang Province in Papua New Guinea. Karkar Island is a volcanic island with substantial terrestrial resources. The Muluk community consists of 330 people in 50 households, with just 5% depending on fishing as their primary occupation. The original case authors focus on the socioeconomic factors and context which influence the success of marine protected areas in Papua New Guinea.
The case study has subsequently been used in comparative analyses regarding Ostrom's Design Principles (see bibliography).
