The fishing community contained in this case study is located approximately 50 km south of the city of Mombasa on the coast of Kenya, outside of the Diani/Chale National Marine Park and Reserve. The village has an estimated 1000 inhabitants in approximately 200 households. Approximately 44% of the households in the community are directly involved in fishery extraction and the community is considered economically dependent on the marine fishery. The original case study authors focused on social capital and leadership within the community. The case study has subsequently been used in comparative analyses regarding Ostrom's Design Principles (see bibliography).
