Besi Kulo, Kot village Panchayat, Sindhupalchok District, Nepal

Case
This case is part of the original Nepal Irrigation Institutions and Systems (NIIS) database developed in the 1980's by a team of researchers under the direction of Dr. Elinor Ostrom at Indiana University. In addition, this case is also part of a longitudinal study that has repeatedly investigated 19 farmer-managed irrigation systems (FMIS) in the Indrawati River Basin that participated in an innovative intervention designed to improve irrigation performance not only by improving physical...

Biodiversity, resilience and the control of ecological-economic systems: the case of fire-driven rangelands

Case
This case explores semi-arid rangelands which may exist in varying degrees as grassland and woodlands.  Depending partly on the soil conditions, more sandy favoring woodlands and more clay favoring grasslands, as well as the behavior of fire and herbivores, an optimally controlled management of this environment looks at the interaction of these elements. In particular, the time horizon of the management planning can heavily influence paths and conditions of the system.

Computer Modeling of the Immune System Reconstruction after Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Case
Attention is focused on the immune system reconstruction and the process of production of T- and B- lymphocytes and natural killer (NK) cells after autologous haematopoietic stem cells transplantation (HSCT). The mathematical model for leukopoiesis proposed in Periodic oscillations in leukopoiesis models with two delays is used as an initial point for investigations. HSCs in bone marrow are presented as two descrite groups: proliferating cell and non-proliferating (quiescent) cells. Quiescent...

Coupled population dynamics in an open, three-trophic-level system

Model
This model explicitly incorporates the immigration and emigration processes in the context of three-trophic-level systems (e.g., a stream reach), and reveals how the coupled populations will change in response to the primary-productivity gradients (e.g., r, K).  In contrast, traditional simple food-chain models study mostly two-trophic-level system which can be open or close.  More interstingly, though not reflected here, there are two contrasting models presented in the paper:...
